Wild yam, dioscorea villosa, member of the Dioscoreaceae family, is native to North
America with a natural range from New England south and west to Texas and Minnesota. It
is a cold-hardy herbaceous perennial found in mixed hardwood forests and grows to an
average mature height of nine to fifteen feet.
Many doctors recommended in the past Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT or ETR= Estrogen Replacement Therapy and MHT= Menopausal Hormonal Therapy) for women as they enter menopause stage in their lives and it has been questioned as to the benefits, but more importantly, its health risks. A study a few years ago by an independent Institutions was supposed to find out answers, but after five years it was stopped due to the negative findings, such increasing heart attacks, blood clotting and a later study found that the risk of Alzheimer’s disease increased by 50% when women have been on these therapies for three years or more!
According to Radford et al., “the vines twine
upward, from right to left”. The leaves are cordate at the base of the plant,
with the upper leaves more ovate. The inflorescence arises from the axils of alternate or whorled leaves. Small greenish-yellow flowers, in drooping racemes or spikes, bloom from April to October. The female plants produce winged seed capsules. Wild yam requires moist, well-drained soil and moderate sunlight to flourish. The root is the medicinal part of
the plant and is harvested in the fall.
Today, wild yam is used worldwide as an ingredient in many topical creams, in the production of steroid hormones such as cortisone, and for treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Cech adds, “the efficacy of wild yam for treating PMS, hot flashes, and other symptoms associated with menopause is due to the antispasmodic and tonic effects, not because the herb is a ‘progesterone precursor’.
Vitex agnus castus (The Chaste Tree or Chasteberry or Monk’s Pepper ) is a popular treatment for the management of female
reproductive disorders including corpus luteum insufficiency, premenstrual syndrome (PMS),menopausal symptoms, and insufficient milk production. The German Commission E recommends it for menstrual problems, mastalgia, and premenstrual syndrome1. The specific
chemical components responsible for its clinical effects have not been determined. One proposed mechanism is an effect on the pituitary’s release of prolactin. Small randomized controlled trials indicate that vitex may be helpful in hyperprolactinemia, PMS and cyclical breast pain.
